Guinea-Bissau: President Embaló arrested as soldiers say they have ‘taken full control of the country’

Shots have been heard around the electoral commission, with the outgoing president saying he has been detained.

On the afternoon of Wednesday 26 November, a body styling itself the “High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order” announced that it was ousting President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, taking “full control” of Guinea-Bissau, halting the electoral process and closing land and air borders.

A curfew was also imposed. The announcement was made in a statement read at armed forces headquarters in the capital by Brigadier General Denis N’Canha, head of the presidency’s military office.

Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embaló told Jeune Afrique that he was arrested this Wednesday, 26 November, at around 1pm while he was in his office at the presidential palace.

The presidential election took place last Sunday, and the outgoing president said he had won with 65% of the vote, by his own count.

Also arrested were the armed forces’ chief of staff, General Biague Na Ntan; the deputy chief of staff, General Mamadou Toure; and the interior minister, Botche Cande.

Disputed poll exposes deeper fault lines

The fallout reflects Guinea-Bissau’s long-running institutional fragility. Embaló, who has repeatedly clashed with parliament and dissolved it in 2022, entered the poll as the favourite, not least because the country’s main opposition force, the PAIGC, and its leader Domingos Simões Pereira were barred from participating.

But the unexpectedly competitive performance of Fernando Dias de Costa fractured the political narrative, with both camps moving swiftly to claim victory ahead of the electoral commission’s announcement.

The arrests signal a dramatic rupture between the presidency and the military hierarchy, long regarded as the ultimate arbiter of political power in Guinea-Bissau. Analysts say this moment was years in the making.

Embaló’s efforts to centralise authority, reshape the security services and marginalise political rivals deepened mistrust within both the political class and armed forces. His insistence on pre-emptively declaring victory, coupled with alleged pressure on institutions to validate his figures, appears to have triggered a decisive pushback from factions within the army.

Domingos Simões Pereira arrested

On Sunday the vote passed off calmly, but without the main opposition leader, Domingos Simões Pereira, who had been barred from standing. His party – the powerful African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) – had nonetheless thrown its weight behind Fernando Dias.

Reached by Jeune Afrique on Wednesday, Domingos Simões Pereira said he was “in a meeting with African Union observers, including [former Nigerian president] Goodluck Jonathan, when someone came to tell us there was gunfire in the city centre”.

He added that, from what he was later told, soldiers tried to force their way into the electoral commission’s offices “to force its chairman to read out results naming Umaro Sissoco Embaló as the winner”, even though, he insists, “Fernando Dias, the candidate we back, won outright in the first round”.

Since then, according to a source close to the two opposition figures, Domingos Simões Pereira and Fernando Dias have been arrested by armed men and taken to the air base.

Ex-president to start serving term in 12 sq metre bedroom in police base in Brasília after time for appeals elapses

 18030

>>18029 (OP)
Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been ordered to start serving his 27-year sentence in a 12 sq metre bedroom in a police base in the capital, Brasília, after his conviction for plotting a coup.

The far-right populist, 70, who governed Latin America’s largest democracy from 2019 until 2022, was handed the punishment in September after the supreme court found him guilty of leading a criminal conspiracy to stop his leftwing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, taking power.

The plot – which involved a plan to assassinate Lula and his running mate, Geraldo Alckmin – foundered after military chiefs refused to take part and the court later convicted Bolsonaro and six accomplices of trying to “annihilate” Brazilian democracy and plunge the country back into dictatorship.

On Tuesday, the supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that Bolsonaro should start serving his sentence after the case formally ended following a period for appeals. Bolsonaro has been living under house arrest since August and was taken into preventive custody on Saturday after unsuccessfully trying to cut off his electronic ankle tag with a soldering iron.

Bolsonaro’s six co-conspirators were also ordered to start their sentences.

The former defence minister Gen Paulo Sergio Nogueira de Oliveira, and the former minister for institutional security Gen Augusto Heleno were arrested and imprisoned in the Planalto Military Command in Brasília. They received sentences of 19 and 21 years respectively.

The former navy commander Adm Almir Garnier Santos, who received a 24-year sentence, was reportedly arrested by navy officials and held on a navy base.

Bolsonaro’s former defence minister, Gen Walter Braga Netto, who received a 26-year sentence, was already in custody having been arrested last December.

The former justice minister, Anderson Torres, who received a 24-year sentence, was expected to be sent to a penitentiary for police officers and other “special” prisoners in Brasília called Papudinha.

Camila Rocha, a political scientist who studies Brazil’s new right, said recent polls revealed a clear decrease in support for Bolsonaro – both in the streets and social media. One study found that only 13% of voters now supported Bolsonaro “no matter what”. Last month, a rally in Brasília organized by Bolsonaro’s family drew about 2,000 people – far smaller than the huge crowds the former president mobilized when at the peak of his powers.

“Could there be more protests? Sure. But I think this declining trend is established,” said Rocha, who saw Bolsonaro in “a dead-end situation”.

Rocha believed Bolsonaro’s arrest was good news for the rightwing politicians hoping to inherit his votes, as well as for voters hoping to see “a reduction in anti-democratic extremism” in Brazil.

Not all of the pro-Bolsonaro schemers sentenced over the coup could be imprisoned on Tuesday. Ramagem, the former head of Brazil’s intelligence agency, Abin, recently skipped the country despite having his passport cancelled.

https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/gramma-the-galapagos-tortoise-san-diego-zoos-oldest-animal-dead-at-141

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo announced on Friday via an Instagram post that Gramma, the beloved Galápagos tortoise, has died.

Gramma arrived at the San Diego Zoo between 1928 and 1931 as part of the zoo's first group of Galápagos tortoises.

Over nearly a century, Gramma has witnessed history. She lived through more than 20 U.S. presidents, two World Wars, and two pandemics. She went from appearing in a handful of black-and-white images to becoming a social media star.

The zoo says Gramma gently touched countless lives as an ambassador for reptile conservation worldwide. And even being called "the Queen of the Zoo" by her care specialists.

In fairness, anyone alive that's 100 years old or older at this point still predates the start of World War II by over a decade. While the last data was from 2024, there are an estimated 700,000+ people aged 100 or older in the world. Just on pure statistics there's bound to be some Jews in that group.

https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20251124-sudan-s-rsf-paramilitary-announces-unilateral-three-month-humanitarian-ceasefire

Sudan's paramilitary group announced on Monday that it was declaring a unilateral three-month humanitarian ceasefire, a day after its rival the regular army rejected an international ceasefire proposal.

 17730

>>17729 (OP)
The head of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces said late on Monday that his paramilitaries would immediately enter into a three-month humanitarian truce, after US President Donald Trump said last week that he would intervene to seek an end to a war that has plunged the country into famine.

The United States, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Saudi Arabia – known as the Quad – earlier this month proposed a plan for a three-month truce followed by peace talks. The RSF responded by saying it had accepted the plan, but soon after attacked army territory with a barrage of drone strikes.

Monday's statement appeared to announce a unilateral ceasefire. It came a day after Sudan's army chief rejected the Quad's proposals, and criticized the inclusion of the United Arab Emirates, which has been widely accused of arming the RSF, as a mediator.

The Gulf state has denied such accusations and said it aims to stop the war.

The 59-year-old Namibian politician was first elected in 2020 with a large margin in the Omupanda constituency, receiving 85% of the vote.

Adolf Hitler Uunona represents the South West Africa People's Organization, which has governed Namibia since it gained independence in 1990.

The country's electoral commission predicts that Uunona will once again secure the majority of votes.

The politician emphasized that, unlike his infamous namesake, he has no plans for genocide or world domination.

Holy schmitz how long is a day in Africa

 17919

IIRC the reason why he was named that is because when he was born the news there hadn't quite caught up to current events, so all that his parents knew is that Hitler was a famous leader but they didn't know WHY he was famous, leading to the existence of this unfortunate bastard geg
